Berger Singerman Partner Christopher Andrew Jarvinen Served as a Discussant at The Jimen Insolvency and Restructuring Dialogue Focused on Consumer Bankruptcy

Christopher Andrew Jarvinen, a partner on the Business Reorganization Team of Berger Singerman LLP, served as a Discussant at The Jimen Insolvency and Restructuring Dialogue (the “Dialogue”) hosted by the Bankruptcy Law and Restructuring Research Center (“BL&RRC”) of the Chinese University of Political Science and Law (“CUPL”) in Beijing, China on April 20, 2019.
The Dialogue is the premier gathering of restructuring professionals, judges, government officials, and academics in mainland China. At the Dialogue, U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Elizabeth S. Stong of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of New York gave a presentation titled, “Time for a Second Chance: Debt Relief for Natural Persons,” during which she spoke about the legal framework for consumer bankruptcies in the United States, as well as the lessons and opportunities from the experience in the United States. Although mainland China does not provide for consumer bankruptcies, the issue is currently being discussed and analyzed.
After her presentation, three Critics provided commentary, including LI Shuguang, the Director of the BL&RRC and a professor at CUPL. The Discussants also serve in a key role at the Dialogue as they provide commentary and pose questions to the speaker. Mr. Jarvinen was invited to serve as one of a limited number of Discussants which included the presidents, judges, and directors of the bankruptcy and civil courts located in Beijing, Shandong, Shanghai, Shenzhen, as well as certain other high-level, government officials, academics, and professionals.
Mr. Jarvinen has been elected to the American College of Bankruptcy, American Law Institute, and the International Insolvency Institute. He received his law degree from Boston College Law School, his undergraduate degree in Economics from Brown University, graduate degrees in theological ethics and religion from Harvard Divinity School and Yale Divinity School, a global Executive Master of Business Administration from FGV-EAESP in São Paulo, Brazil and both a Postgraduate Diploma in Organisational Leadership and a Master of Science degree in Major Programme Management from the Saïd Business School of the University of Oxford.
